11 Foot, 4" Tall Salvaged Wood, Plaster & Aluminum Column, Temple of the Winds



This unique, 11'4" column was salvaged from the historic 1850's Cascades Inn in Healing Springs, Virginia. The column features a a Temple of the Winds capital, a round column and a 2-peice base.

This column is comprised of 5 pieces; an ornate Temple of the Winds style plaster capital with a lead cap, a slightly tapered wooden column shaft, and a 2-piece base with a round composite torus and a square aluminum base.

Condition: Very good. Once used as an exterior column, this piece shows weathering throughout with light oxidation on the metal base, worn edges along the top and bottom of the column shaft, and chipped, flaking paint throughout. The plaster capital shows minor dents, dings, and scuffs in areas.

History: This column was salvaged from Cascades Inn in Healing Springs, Virginia. This historic inn was comprised of a hotel built in 1850, with various renovations taking place in the early 1900's, and a motel built around the 1950's. During the civil war, the hotel was used as a hospital for sick soldiers. The Inn was also used as a storage location for various fixtures such as furniture and plumbing from the nearby Homestead resort. The Cascades Inn and items from it are featured on Season 11, Episode 10, of the DIY Network show, "Salvage Dawgs".
