Description

This uncommon oak landing newel post is sure to make a statement! A rich stained finish compliments the gorgeous grain of the oak, which has subtle quarter-sawn markings in areas. This post has ball finials at the top and bottom of the shaft for use on a landing. The top box of the post has the remnants of 2 sections of handrail perpendicular to one another, with 2 bullseye rosettes on the other faces. Rows of 3 carved vertical beads with fluting between run along the main shaft of the piece. A large area has been cut out below the beading toward the bottom of the post. A 2 3/4"(D) x 2 5/8"(W) x 10"(H) piece remains below the corner shared by the handrails. This piece is in good condition with minor wear and some discoloration consistent with the age of the piece.
This post was salvaged from a circa 1894 addition to a Queen Anne style dairy farm house built in the mid-1800's in Barnesville, Ohio. This house and items from it are featured on Season 10, Episode 6, of the DIY Network show, "Salvage Dawgs".
