Description

This regal mantel was salvaged from the Kean Estate, a 17,000 square-foot mansion atop the highest point in Livingston, New Jersey, once home of the 10-term U.S. Congressman Robert W. Kean.

The mantel is composed of brilliant white marble with subtle gray veining. Featuring a paneled header, scrolled elements, and delicately molded ornament, this unique mantel is sure to bring sophisticated charm to any space.

Condition: This piece is in fair condition with general wear and tear, such as surface scuffs, scratches, and discoloration, as well as some chipped components. The floral urn applique has been removed from the header panel and is not included with purchase. The left leg return is missing and will need replacement. A list has been compiled detailing the size and conditions of each piece, available upon request.

The Greek Cast Iron Fireplace Surround: This cast iron firebox surround features classical Greek imagery, with canephora in relief on each leg and a winged figure (possibly Boreas, Greek god of the cold north, or northeast, wind and bringer of winter) with a cherub under one arm and a robed or cloaked figure under the other arm in relief on the header.
Each end of the header has 2 mounting holes which coordinate with threaded holes on the back of the legs, allowing the components to be bolted together. Included with the surround is a small grate that hangs from the tabs along the sides of the firebox opening.

Condition of the firebox surround: Good condition, shows one repaired crack on the border on the left side of the header. Additional repairs may be necessary to sturdy the panel.

History: This mantel & surround was salvaged from the Kean Estate, a 17,000 square-foot mansion that sat atop the highest point in Livingston, New Jersey. This Georgian style stone mansion was the original home of 10-term U.S. Congressman Robert W. Kean, father of former Governor Thomas Kean. This sprawling residence features 14 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and 15 fireplaces. The Kean Estate, and items from it, is featured on Episode 6, Season 11, of the DIY Network Show, "Salvage Dawgs".
